Do Permanent Lights Survive Alberta Winters?

If there is one question we hear more than any other from Edmonton homeowners, it is this: will these lights actually survive an Alberta winter? It is a fair question. We get -30C cold snaps, ice storms, wind, chinooks that melt everything in a day, and then refreeze it all overnight.

The short answer is yes. We have installed over 500 systems across the Edmonton area and had zero weather-related failures. But let us explain why.

The Track Is a Sealed Channel

The lighting track is not a strip of bulbs clipped to your gutter. It is a sealed aluminium channel with a polycarbonate lens. The LED modules sit inside the channel, protected from ice, snow, and rain. Ice builds up on top of the track and slides off — it does not get inside.

IP-Rated Housing

The housing is IP67 rated, which means it is fully sealed against dust and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 metre deep. That is overkill for rain and snow, but it means the electronics inside are completely protected. The rated operating temperature range is -40C to +85C. Edmonton winters do not come close to the lower limit.

Cold-Weather Installation

We install year-round. The sealants we use to mount the track to your fascia are rated for cold-weather application — we have done installs at -20C without any issues. The track is mechanically fastened, not just glued, so even if a sealant takes longer to cure in cold weather, the track is held in place by screws.

Wind

The track is screwed into your fascia board. It is not going anywhere. We have installed on homes in exposed areas — Windermere, Summerside, new subdivisions in Leduc with no windbreaks — and had zero wind-related failures. The track is low-profile and sits flush against the fascia, so there is nothing for the wind to catch.

Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Edmonton is notorious for chinooks. The temperature swings from -20C to +5C in a matter of hours, and then back down. This causes ice to form, melt, and refreeze. Because the track is sealed and mechanically fastened, freeze-thaw cycles do not affect it. Water cannot get inside, and the track cannot pull away from the fascia.

What About the Power Supply?

The power supply and Wi-Fi controller are typically mounted in your garage or an exterior junction box. They are rated for cold weather operation. The controller connects to your home Wi-Fi so you can control the lights from your phone without going outside.

What Happens If Something Does Fail?

Every system we install comes with a Lifetime Parts Warranty · 4-Year Labour Warranty. If anything goes wrong — winter or otherwise — you call us and we come out. You do not climb a ladder. We handle it.

The Bottom Line

Permanent LED lighting is built for climates like ours. The sealed track, cold-rated components, and mechanical fastening mean it handles everything an Alberta winter can throw at it. We would not install it on 500+ homes if it did not.
